What Is the Average Penis Size?

If you have ever wondered how your penis size compares to others', you are not alone. Many men are curious about their penis size in relation to the average. Unfortunately, this common curiosity sometimes turns into excessive obsession and anxiety about penis size. This can be an unhealthy and often unnecessary fixation, especially considering that for most men who think their penis is too small, their actual size is completely normal.

So, what is the average size of the penis? A study of over 15,000 men found that the average length of the flaccid penis is 3.6 inches (about 9.1 centimeters), and the average circumference is 3.7 inches (about 9.4 centimeters). When erect, the average length of the penis is 5.1 inches (about 13.9 centimeters), and the average circumference is 4.5 inches (about 11.4 centimeters).

This might come as a surprise to you. In this world where a large penis has long been associated with masculinity, strength, manliness and status, the idea that a large penis is the norm is widely prevalent. Throughout history, men in various parts of the world have used some unwise methods to increase the size of their penises. Members of the Cholomec tribe in Peru and Sadhus in India attach weights to their penises in an attempt to increase their length. In Brazil, members of the Topinama tribe even let venomous snakes bite their penises, swelling them up to increase their size.

Nowadays, men who are dissatisfied with the size of their penis may try techniques such as "jelqing" for penis stretching (the effect may be minimal or temporary), or even consider surgery. Usually, their penis size is already perfectly normal. Some people also believe that the pornography industry has fueled unrealistic expectations about penis size and led people to mistakenly believe that size is the most important factor for the pleasure and satisfaction of a sexual partner.

In fact, numerous studies have shown that the majority of men's female partners do not pay much attention to the size of the penis. A study conducted by the University Hospital of Groningen on sexually active women revealed that 77% of the respondents believed that the length of their partner's penis was unimportant (55%) or completely unimportant (22%). Additionally, a study involving over 52,000 participants indicated that approximately 85% of women expressed satisfaction with their partner's penis size, while only 55% of men expressed satisfaction.

There are relatively few studies on the degree to which gay and bisexual men value the size of their partners' penises. However, a study on this topic indicates that men with male sexual partners have a more accurate understanding of the average real size of the penis than those with only female sexual partners, because they have more contact and a closer relationship with other penises.

Since the average size of the penis is smaller than what most men think, and its importance to sexual partners is generally lower than what most men believe, the concerns about size for most men are likely to be unnecessary. However, if you find that your penis size frequently causes you anxiety or distress, please consult your healthcare provider or therapist and inform them of your concerns.
